im not sure what the machine is called or what the exercise is called but if you ask a trainer this:
the upper body is suspended horizontal to the ground, and the legs are "clamped" in the machine. Letting your upper body hang and face towards the ground, the arms are crossed at the chest and youre sorta doing upside-down sit-ups. there is a picture of it being done here:

do this with a weight, and it does wonders for the lower back and butt. my boyfriend always comments on how my lower back is so toned...mostly because im addicted to this exercise.

The best way to strengthen your lower back is to strengthen your abdomen.

The best exercise for your lower back is one that you can do all day long, every day.
It's called KEEP GOOD POSTURE.
It's something that everyone should be doing, but our lives are sedentary and we want chairs to hold us up, and beds to hold us up, when we wouldn't need it if we'd learn to do it ourselves.

my football coach has us do bridges but instead of having both arms under us we are only on 1 arm wiht our chest and stomach facing foreward and the opposite arm up in the air for support it strenghtens ur obliques and lower back.

Reverse Crunches....if you have acsess to a gym there is a machine for it and it works really well
