Ok, so i have just found this fantastic butcher at Alexandria. It's called Tony's Meats. They have really CHEAP meat, but it looks like its great quality. (it's a pitty I am working and will have to come back on the weekend to buy some!)

I want to know if anyone else has found a cheaper alternative than the big supermarkets.

For example, I buy all of my fruit and vege at the markets where I save a bundle compared to Coles. And now I will be buying my meat at this butchers outlet.

Does anyone else have a tip to cut down the grocery bills?

Usually its Americans who do not identify themselves as such out here. You write you are in Alexandria and I thought you meant Virginia but there is no Coles chain there so I googled and that is how I found out you are an Aussie. Anyway, where I am (Montreal) fruits and veggies are not usually cheaper at farmers markets but they are better quality. For grocery economizing we shop ethnically-owned stores in their ethnic neighborhoods and, also, we have a garden. Also fishing rods.

My husband and I have a monthly contest to see how much we can cut down on food bills. Sort of out of necessity, but more for fun and to be creative.

We read the fliers when they come out in the papers, clip coupons, shop at the Chef's Market in the summer, freeze whatever we can when it's on sale, stock up on canned goods and pasta when they're on sale, I make our own bread and tortillas, we use dried beans instead of canned, and use whatever coupons we can find. And use our club cards at the stores that have them.

My record is saving 33% off a grocery bill. :)

Yes I agree, going to flea markets and farmers markets can cut down on your food bills. If there is a weekly farmers market in your neighborhood, try to go there! Look for good prices!
