Our health insurance provider requires a medical exam, blood sample and urinalysis. I assume part of the purpose of the screening is to check for THC and other goodies. Is this correct?

yes that is correct

a lot of insurance providers will not provide benefits for drug abusers. you must have a prescription from a doctor for any drugs that might show up in the urinalysis.

Indeed it could. They may check for nicotine, as well. It all depends on the policy.

There are tons of things that urine can tell a practitioner about your health, and drug use is one of the least important. Hormonal imbalances, kidney problems, infections, diabetes, pregnancy, and many other medical issues can be determined through urinalysis. It's an important part of any standard physical.

Of course, you have the right to know what tests will be performed and why BEFORE you take them. Just contact the insurance company to find out what specific screens they require and what they do with that information.

What part of a urine analysis involves a urine for drug testing? A u/a has specific test in it looking for things like white blood cells and red blood cells, specific gravity, and many other things. It is impossible to collect someones urine for drug testing without their knowledge. You would have to give expressed permission for this type of test to be done. It is illegal for a health insurance carrier to require drug testing after you are a participant. It could be that they are doing this pre- participant to see what your general health is like before they take your money. Do you have something your worried they might find out about.... you don't have to consent to drug testing... keep in mind they may not offer you insurance if they specifically want this type of testing... either way they have to ask for it and you have to give them permission to do it.
