Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, lasts 40 days not counting Sundays and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.
In 2007, Ash Wednesday will fall on February 21 and Easter on April 8.

25 26 27 28 29 30 31 = 6 days, 34 days total.
01 02 03 04 05 06 07 = 6 days, 40 days total.

The first day of Lent, which is Ash Wednesday. It was yesterday. However, it's never too late at any time during Lent to make a Lenten sacrifice with prayer, fasting, almsgiving, or all of those.

Lent begins this year on February 21, so you should have 'given up' things starting yesterday when you got up ... but since you 'didn't know' when Lent started, you may 'pray to ask God's forgiveness for your ignorance' and start 'giving up' something right away ...

If giving up things is what you choose to do for Lent it starts on Ash Wednesday.

40 days before Easter. But remember this, Jesus paid it all and he doesn't ask us to do this. It isn't even in the Bible. He wants us to have faith in Him, love Him and obey His word. Anyone can give up a favorite food....He calls us to live a LIFETIME of obedience.
