I smoke. The reason (I'll be honest) is because I was in high school & all my "cool" friends were doing it. Before I knew it, it was nearly 10 years later. I'm still smoking, my teeth are getting dingy, and I reek. I don't even tell co-workers because I'm embarrassed. I hide it as best I can. My car stinks, my hair stinks, my clothes stink.

And although I'd love to just "quit"...its not that easy at all. You can think you are going to stop smoking but a craving kicks in and you just want "one more...last one, I swear."

Its sad & I wish I had never started. The goal is to stop soon enough that you don't talk through a hole in your throat or die all together.

People start because their parents did it, or they want to be rebellious, or to follow people they think are "cool." They start because they do not understand how bad it is for them, or because they think they can quit whenever they want to. What they do not fully understand is how addictive cigarettes are. They continue because cigarettes are addictive. It creates a sense of "relief" from stress, though it is a false sense, because the addiction is part of the reason they feel stress in the first place. Quitting can be painful and difficult, because the body believes it needs drugs in the cigarettes, and it reacts against the absence of the cigarettes. Many smokers DO want to quit, but literally cannot. A lot of them require medical help to pull it off, but that can be expensive and difficult. Often smokers do not know what their options are. Some even refuse to smoke, put off by all the nagging they get for being a smoker in the first place. Pride can be as addictive as nicotein!

Smoking is a touchy issue... I agree that smoking is fairly foolish given the amount of medical evidence not to... I would not generalize and call smokers stupid though. There are plenty of stupid non-smokers, let's not get into name calling. Smoking aside from the risk of hear disease and cancer IS IN FACT a very beneficial and useful sedetive, stimulant and helpful DRUG. That is exactly what my Doctor said too!! It can calm you down, it can give you a little pick up, it is a very powerful mental and physical drug. Nicotene has been used for CENTURIES!!!

People smoke today for stress relief, because they started when it WAS fashionable, it goes well with a cold alcoholic drink, to pass time, as a crutch for something. There are many reasons why we smoke, probably not a good one. Many smokers in fact would like to quit, but to be honest, you get to a point where you just plain old enjoy it. It is kinda dirty, offensive to people who don't smoke, but understanding and respecting our rights as smokers should in theory cement our understanding and respect to a non-smoker's right to fresh air as well.

Not sure if I got too far off the question, just my thoughts on the matter, hope it helps.

I just recently stopped and it has been very hard. I started because I thought it was "cool" and some other people were doing it. But then, you get hooked. You can't stop.
Even though I really wanted too. I saw my teeth get yellow, my skin changed, my hair and clothes always smelled like smoke. It was expensive to buy cigarettes.

But none of that mattered......... I couldn't stop. The nicotine is very addictive.
Now, I am 27. and have quit.
It was a nasty habit, That I wish I hads never started in the first place.

Smoking feels cool at first because it gives you a short-lasting buzz/rush. Once you're addicted it doesn't give you this anymore, just relieves your cravings... But quitting smoking takes ALOT of effort so if people don't quit it's because they don't want to enough, you have to be really motivated to actually go through with it. Most smokers kind of want to stop but just don't get around to deciding to go through with it since for the time being it's way easier just to keep smoking.

It usually starts oit as peer-presure, fitting in or strees related.

Then after a few days, a phycial change is noticed, smoking calms you down, untill you get worked up again. This is the beginning to an addiction to nicotine.

As a smoker I can tell you it releives stress, calms me down when I am pissed and it is also a habit. I go to certain places and don't smoke at all but I go to others and i do. I don't smoke at home but do at work because of who I am with. Smoked for over 20 years

it starts with pressure, wanting to be cool or wanting to hurt or punish yourself

then if you don't stop it becomes a uncontrollable gripping habit over great amounts of time

it also, of course, depends on what it is your smoking

some substances are far more addictive than others
