All this about cats being aloof, etc is not true. People have heard something that sounds like it could be kind of true and they run with it. I own 3 of the neediest cats in the world, they follow me to the bathroom, in the shower, they have to sleep with me, they come when called, they listen to me. I also have 2 dogs, one of which couldn't care less about me.
In general, cats don't require any training other than the litterbox, and make more convienent pets for apartments and people who lead busy lives who wouldn't otherwise have time to train, walk, bathe and play with a dog.
Some are allergic to one or the other. Some hate the way cats shed, and cleaning out the litterbox, so they have dogs. Others want a pet they can pick up and hold and that will sit still on their laps, so they get a cat.
Dogs integrate well into families because they were made to live in packs. They live to make their owners happy so they don't get kicked out of the pack.
Cats however, aside from lions, live not alone but they opperate outside a social hierarchy. This can make them seem aloof and independent, but in reality, they just do what they want because they don't have to worry about upseting alpha cat.

Time.....that they have available to care for a pet and how much they are home to let them out to potty, time to train them
Money........they can put into a pet (dogs tend to cost more all the way around)
personal preference........some people want that greeting when they get home and a shadow to follow them around...where as others want a pet that can be on there own and be happy
Allowance.....some people can only have a cat where they live

I just have to say though that cats can be trained to do tricks and that they do greet you at the door and love to see you and that some dog breeds are very aloof and untrusting, non playful and will own there owners if a firm hand is not taken with time so do your homework people

Well, those of us who are highly independent certainly don't mind a cat that is as well! I'm not sure it is so much as a difference in people but a difference in their life styles and what they see as responsibilities to a pet. It is a whole lot easier to leave a cat for a few days with a large bowl of food and water than a dog!

In the busy world that we live in many people choose to have cats as opposed to dogs.. cats are , more independent, they can be left at home alone for short periods of time ( ie like a two days over a weekend) and be fine as long as they have enough food, clean boxes, plenty of water, and are not subjected to extreme changes in temp. Dogs, do require more time, must be walked at let out, can not be left for long periods of time. We have 8 dogs and 9 cats.. we would not trade or give up even one.Animals are a HUGE responsibility.. before you make a decision on what kind of a animal you want.. EXP)LORE your options.. people who say they are " cat " people many time have experienced a trauma involving a dog and feel cats are " a safe bet"

I don't know, but there's all these misconceptions about people who perfer cats to dogs. Personally, I prefer cats to dogs simply for the reason, you can leav for two days and not have to take your pet with you, or find someone to watch the pet for you. When you have a cat, set out plenty of water, plenty of food, and a fresh litterbox!

dog-folks ask for less: unconditional love is a good thing that doesn't have to be worked for. the pooch cares not that your chair squashed his tail a minute ago: he's back for more, tongue hanging out and slobbering. an easy life, a comfortable one, awaits the dog person. let him out to crap... you'll clean it in your good time, and the dog won't care.

cat-folk demand more. cats demand you pay attention and devise plans, that you have some idea how things work. they are crafty and can be loving on their terms, and demand the same of you. you may think you know your cat, but only as much as he's willing to show you, and that has to be good enough for you. a clever, thoughtful life with well-earned rewards awaits the cat person. clean that damn box or kitty will make some changes in YOUR life!

I don't feel there really is a difference, as I own cats and a dog, and I love them all the same.

Oh absolutely I even read about a rare breed of dog that enjoys playing with females more than male humans and tends to show off to get extra attentions from females. They know the difference animals are very smart.

Does one have to make a choice? I love both! They are such cute fuzzy friends....I even have a cat that fetches and one that hugs you if you pat your shoulders, which I could never get my dog to do. But the dog is good in her ability to run with me outside. They're different, but they both take love and patience.
