Argentina is called "el enano cabezón" (the big-headed dwarf) because so many of its people live in or around Buenos Aires, the capital, over one in three Argentines live in Buenos Aires or the Provincia de Buenos Aires that surrounds it.

Eastern Argentina is very flat. The Pampa húmeda (the part of the pampas where it rains an adequate amount) is among the most fertile parts of the Earth.

Argentina produces all the oil it needs, and is not dependent on Arabs or anyone else for oil.

Porteños ( residents of Buenos Aires) are night people. Restaurants don't begin serving until 9:00 PM. Night club acts rarely begin before 10:30 or 11:00. The buses run all night. They have some sort of air suspension, which makes them emit a hissing sound as they barrel down the rather narrow streets.

The main avenue of Buenos Aires is 20 lanes wide.

Argentina produces the world's best beef and among the world's best wines.

In Patagonia, in the S. part of Argentina, the wind blows all the time. The UN has helped fund a wind energy project there.

Argentines noprmally drink yerba mate, rather than tea of coffee. The chopped up pieces of the plant called mate (ilex paraguayensus) are crammed into a gourd, which is filled with boiling water, and this is drunk through a metal straw with a filter on the bottom. It contains caffeine.

The most famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel, who died in a plane crash in the 1930's is still extremely popular. His smiling face is everywhere, and in the cementary where he is buried, fans try to keep a lit cigarette forever burning in his hand.

Argentina has suffered more from bad politics than nearly any other country on Earth. Most of the really worst leaders have been military men.

Things seem to be improving now. Argentina is a democracy, and the military is unlikely to take over.

In Argentina, it is coldest in May and June and warmest around Christmas.

The estuary called the Rio de la Playa is mostly fresh water, even though it is very wide. The Paraná River drains a huge area of tropical Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil and has more water than the Mississippi.

It was one of the richest countries in the world sometime I think in the early nineteen hundreds, even richer than some European countries like Italy, but it fell back, I forgot why.

Modernization resulted from large-scale Italian, German, and Spanish immigration in the decades after 1880 (World Almanac)

Also, it is known for having a lot of immigrants from Europe and even Japan, Lebanon and Syria...
Look it up on www.wikipedia.org and look under demographics or history.

Make sure you emphasize Buenos Aires, it's huge and very densely populated (almost twice the population density of Los Angeles, the most densely populated metropolitan area in USA)
4800 people/square kilometer in Buenoes Aires
