Make sure you install the printer driver from the printer's CD onto your computer. Without the driver, your computer will not detect your printer.

I had a similar problem with my scanner. I did a reinstall of my whole system. It's software was installed, but the scanner didn't recognize. What I did if I remember, I unplugged the power, the usb cable, or if you have parallel you may not need to. If the cables are re-plugged in, make sure the software is installed. Then go to detect hardware. And even in the control panel, system, device manager. See if the scanner is detected there and not disabled. These should do it.

A printer is an OUTput device whereas a scanner is an input device. With reference from the computer, it sends data OUT to the printer (or your screen). Conversely, your computer receives information from an input device like a scanner, mouse, or keyboard. Therefore, a printer can never scan and send data back to the printer unless there is a scanner feature that comes with it. In the market, they call it multifunction printer or 3-in-1 printers. Just bear in mind that the scanning feature is an added function to the printer.

Make sure the driver for your old scanner is compatible with your new Operating System. You can often download an updated driver from the scanner manufacturer's web site.
