You should feed your dog dog food as a regular diet. But go ahead and feed people food for treats. I compete with my dogs in obedience and agility. We use real food all the time to reward behaviors that we want. One of my dogs favorites is dry cereal. And of course steak and turkey too. I stay away from preservatives but that is a personal preference. Dogs don't get high cholesterol. When you feed people food treats be sure to deduct those calories from your dogs daily allotment. You don't want a fat dog!

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Don't get a dog, Please, it sounds like you are not old enough to know how to take care of one. Dogs need food made especially for them, they shouldn't eat people food. It shortens their lives, and destroys their livers, it also causes dogs to have allergies to their skins, like hot spots. do you even know what hot spots are? Wait until you are an adult and can afford vet bills because they always need to go to the vet, for shots and care. If you have problems ticking off people what makes you think you won't abuse a dog? Please think about it before getting a poor dog and you feed it cheerios and turkey dogs, that advice from this site is from a child or an idiot .

If people tell you that you can feed your dog human food, don't listen to them. You CAN feed it the food, but you really shouldn't. Human food takes years off of the animal's life every time you feed it something. Dog food is made especially for the dog's body, just like how medicine is made for the human body.
Fruit is all right, though. Try not to feed it vegetables, it could get sick. But fruit is fine. My Pitbulls love eating little pieces of apples and bananas, and sometimes oranges. Just don't let them eat banana and orange peels. Gross! Lol.
Don't feel stupid for asking questions like this. I just recently asked if anyone could help me on figuring out my new puppy's breed. Lol.
I have trouble making friends, too. And honestly, animals are far better friends than humans are. Good luck with this dog. And remember not to feed it human foods. =)

I would feed dog food as the main part of a balanced diet but you can safely feed and it's actually really a healthy thing to give your pet things like, unseasoned baked chicken meat, banana, apple, carrots, salmon, blueberries, cheese, eggs, brown rice, and many other human foods.
If you look at the super healthy holistic brands of food (like Innova, Flint River Ranch, Wysong, Canidae, Solid Gold) you'll see no fillers, fewer chemicals and preservatives, and all kinds of fruits and vegetables listed in the ingredients and alternative protein sources like salmon, duck and bison. Just remember to use these as treats and that too much can upset your dogs tummy leading to the runs or vomiting... So just a bit until you're sure of what your dog can handle.
Just make sure nothing is junk food like greasy or fried, and that you've done more web based research as to what is not healthy for your dog like onions, chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts... These things should never be fed to a dog. On a side note Tylenol should never be given to a dog as it is toxic to them.
Since many here seem to not believe that human food can be healthy I would suggest you do a lot of web based research and talk to your vet about healthy "human food" supplements.
Here is the ingredients list for the Innova brand, one of the top dog foods on the market. Another bonus is the holistic brands go so far as to use human grade ingredients and meats in their kibbles, not the by-products and lower grade meat scraps other brands use:
Turkey
Chicken
Turkey Meal
Chicken Meal
Potatoes
Herring Meal
Chicken Fat
Natural Flavors
Egg
Garlic
Apples
Carrots
Tomatoes
Cottage Cheese
Alfalfa Sprouts
Dried Chicory Root
Taurine
Lecithin
Rosemary Extract
Vitamins/Minerals
Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms

You should always feed your dog good dog food . You can on special occasions give him a treat of your food. But not all the time your grandma is right there to much people food is not good for them. Agood food like iams and if you want to give your dog a treat give him a greeny. They love them and are great for there teeth. You can buy them at any pet store.

Whoa, slow down, friend!
A dog needs dog food. I do agree that Cheerios are way too sugary for a dog, and the turkey dogs have more salt than the dog needs.
Now, sometimes my grandmother would make gravy without salt and use that to flavor her dog's food. And meat is all right, if it's not loaded down with salt and doesn't have bones that will shatter or splinter. And sometimes my parents will let their dogs lick the plates after dinner.
Before you get a dog, make sure your family is cool with it. You'll probably need a little help taking care of it. And remember that a dog needs to be loved too.
Good luck, Honey.

ok sweety...no, you should not feed a dog people food like fruit, bones or cereal, it can make the dog very sick. you have to buy the dog some dog food, like puppy chow if it is a puppy or adult dog food if it is an older dog. you also have to make sure the dog gets all of their vaccinations(shots) so they will be healthy. and you need to spend time with the dog and show it alot of love, don't yell or hit it. a dog can be your best friend and will always love you. listen to your grandma she is trying to help you. take care.

Dogs should eat dog food....that's why they make dog food....they are not people and shouldnt eat people food....do you think it might upset your system to eat dog food? the same is true of dogs, they only need their own food.....and if you think you might kill "the dumb thing" I hope you think twice before getting a dog.....calling a dog a thing makes me feel that you dont know what you are getting into.....and if you get ticked off are you going to hurt the dog? think a lot before you take on an animal that can live for 15 years and need you for that long....
