Parrots born in aviaries or by professional breeders are often "banded." I'm sure the numbers are registered somewhere...but I wouldn't begin to know where to look. Perhaps your local petshop would be a good place to check for more info. Our Moloccan Cockatoo also has a metal band on one of his legs. Closed bands are only placed on very young baby birds because there is a point where their feet will grown so fast that if you don't get them on in a certain time frame you will never get a closed band on it. Many breeders will have the initials on the band, the last two digits of the year they were hatched and there will be 3 to 4 other numbers that breeders will have engraved on the band to identify the baby and which breeder pair it came from. Breeders who want to be able to ship their birds in the USA most Airlines require they have the bands on the leg, because you never know that if an unbanded bird was illegally caught in the wild.

It's not a ring, it's an anklet. A pretty anklet. Can I have it?
