The Malamute is a larger, heavy-boned dog bred for freighting and hauling heavy weights over long distances. The Siberian Husky is a smaller dog bred for speed and agility.

Check out the resource below. They tell you the difference. :) Great dogs, either one of them.

Similar but 2 distinct and separate breeds.
The Malamute is a larger, heavy-boned dog bred for freighting and hauling heavy weights over long distances. The Siberian Husky is a smaller dog bred for speed and agility.

The Malamute tends to be bigger and stockier, and the husky more agile, as well as a few other physical differences.

Probably not the best suited for warmer climates.

Lots! The Alaskan Malamute and the Siberian Husky differ in physical characteristics as well as purpose. Each breed has specific differences found in characteristics such as ear set, coat length and tail set. Please don't go buy a dog just because you saw it in a movie and you thing it's cute. Both of these dogs are high energy dogs, they need a job or some sort of physical activity EVERY day. They need a alpha dog in their 'pack'. However, they are very friendly and great dogs.

That being said, both of these dogs are used to climates in the arctic, therefore they have thick furry coats and aren't suited for a Mediterranean climate. Take a look around your local newspapers looking for adds for puppies for sale of these breeds if you are still interested in getting one. Then go talk to the breeder and as him/her about the breed and their dog's in particular. Take some time to do research and learn about the breeds and what it takes to own one. Don't rush into a decision, take your time.

Take a look at http://www.akc.org/breeds/alaskan_malamute/ and http://www.akc.org/breeds/siberian_husky for more info. That's the American Kennel Club, the people who make up the breed standards in the USA. Look around for the Australian version.

They can adapt to hot summers, but their coat won't look as full and beautiful as they do in cold weather. Have you ever seen those thin polar bears kept in zoos somewhere hot like Singapore? With the very unattractive coat? Yeah they adapt. They don't put on fat (no insulation needed), and they don't grow a thick coat. Sad to say, these animals looked like a ghost of what they really should be. By the way, I wish they hadn't done the computer animation in some scenes in that movie Eight Below. They did computer animation to make the dogs act more like humans or like cartoon dogs. I thought it was unnatural. I love Mals.

Both breeds of dogs are great companions.
Huskies are smaller than the Malamute.
I loved the movie eight below!!
Both breeds do like colder climates but both breeds do adjust to the climates that they live in.
I do not suggest to shave the dogs down so they can stay cool. Dogs stay cool by panting and sweating from the pads on their paws, if you shave them down the fur usually grows back thicker so the body has to work harder to stay cool. If you do decide to get one of the breeds just have a cool pool of water for them so if they get overly hot they will just cool down in the pool or in your home.
Both breeds are wonderful pets and companions.
Good luck

A Mal is larger and more solid. They also only have brown eyes.
A Sibe is smaller, more agile and can have blue eyes.
Sibes are also more social than Mals and are more accepting of strange dogs. Mals are very pack oriented...if your not from their pack, they will be wary of you.
Also Mals are the most closely related domesticated dog to wild wolves. The order is wolf, malamute, akita, then husky.

NO if you get one keeps its hair long it sounds crazy but they will actually stay cooler if u shave it or cut its hair the sun hurts their skin and makes them hot.. i live in mississippi and so does my cousin and she has a mal and she is use to the heat.. it gets pretty darn hot here also.. but the dogs are very stubborn.. she is sweet besides the fact she has attacted her other dog!!! but if you get one keep its hair long!!!

they both cannot live in hot climates BUT you can give them close hair cuts or shave them so they wont be hot in the summer! They are practically the same but i prefer a husky! They look sweeter!
