when we are abroad, the british are called brits, the australians are called aussies, the scottish are called scots, so why is it deemed so offensive to call a pakistani a paki. it is after all only a shortened version of the real name, just like all the others. this message is not intended to offend, but id like to know why they feel violated, and say we are racist for it. i dont care when im called a BRIT, but if i did care, no one would do anything about it.

I don't think most Pakistanis( or the ones I know) particularly object to the word 'Paki', so much as the way it's used. If I was in England & was told to ' go back to where you came from, you f**ing Jock' I'd take offence. This did actually happen to me in Birmingham a couple of years ago. It was a Paki that said it!! Brilliant!!
I do think that most of the PC anti-racist brigade are not in fact coloured, or ethnic or whatever, rather they are middle-class Guardian-reading curtain twitchers who like telling others what to do. i.e. teachers, MPs, social workers etc. & they're adding to the East-West tension with all their cr*p.
P.S. Why can black folk refer to each other as 'n*gg*r', but whites can't?

Because its not just an abbreviation anymore, its like some words that describe black people, all they do is decribe skin colour, but they were in a context that was racist, and so became racist in themselves.

Also the word Paki is used for all asian people, whether they are from Pakistan, India, Nepal or anywhere else for that matter by people who just want to make short cuts without actually finding anything out about the people.

Plus you are assuming since your happy to be called a brit, that everyone will be happy being called by their nationality. Thats called ethnocentrism, assuming all other cultures are like your own.

Its not the fact that people say the word paki, it is what people mean by the word, nobody says the word Brit as a offence remark. whenever people use the word paki it is said in a way to be offencive. That is why. It is never used in a non-offencive way. It is usually always following a words such as F**king. It is also because people genralise all asian from that area as pakis, just because they are brown skinned and not because where they are from!

Its great question, the answer is that in the past Pakis was used as an insult term, same as the word Negro is to Black eventhough its not at all an insulting term on its own, it means "A person with dark skin who comes from Africa (or whose ancestors came from Africa)"

But its just the past effects the future, and i think they are right, not to like it.

yep i agree with you 100% - we all get called all sorts of things im english living in oz so i get called a pommie!!! - (i do admit i prefer to be called english and not british) becuase im not welsh or irish or scottish im english - there are lots of japense here in oz and we call them japs. Its stupid how you cannot call dark folk black anymore- if your trying to describe someone what are you suppose to say that they are chocolate coloured - the white man still gets described as white so why is the word black wrong.the world has gone to pot and as far as i am concerned i will always carry on as i have cant change the habit/words of a life time. *** This answer is not written to offend anyone***

You know I have often wondered about that too.

I am Irish and the Irish have been called Paddy's, and sometimes Fenians, whether it applys or not but I couldn't care less. 'A rose by any other name is still a rose' so what does it matter.

I was hailed as "Hey Irish" once and I quite liked it hahaha.

i think that brit, scot, and aussie, are names made up by the people themselves, but paki is something they r called by foregners.
