Maybe you're not concentrating enough on squeezing your ab muscles.... or maybe you're trying to crunch too much. It should be a small concentrated movement. Try doing it with a yoga ball. About.com has decent pictures and tells you how to do ab exercises correctly.

I would recommend using an exercise ball while performing ab workouts to support your back. There are a ton of great ab workouts using the excercise ball. I also have back pain if I do my ab workout on the floor or on benches, that is why I use an excercise ball

No, you are doing them wrong. Don't do them anymore until you can get some one who knows to tell you what you are doing wrong, you could really mess up your back.
