Today after her "interview" at the Doggie Daycare and Boarding place - my Doberman has a puncture wound from a bite (all dogs must have up to date shots to be there - so no disease worry) - on her back right quarter. It is angled, no blood - light pink mostly and darker pink at the end - I would say over 1/4" but not 1/2" deep. She keeps licking it ...
Question - should I take her to the vet for stitches or let her continue to lick it and clean it out with Peroxide?

Thanks

i would say take her to the vet to be sure that nothing has gotten in it like dirt or infection......she may need stitches if its that deep depending on how long it is and no don't let her lick it especially if your cleaning it with peroxide cause its like her licking the peroxide......plus her licking it could keep it from healing

1. Do NOT let her lick it - this will surely cause it to get infected. There is lots of bacteria in the mouth. If you need to, get a cone collar to keep her from licking at it.

2. You should take her to the vet as soon as you can, the reason being that if it *does* need stitches and you wait to take her to the vet, the veterinarian will have to anesthetize her, cut out all of the old dead tissue, and then stitch it up. It would be a longer procedure, much more expensive (we could be talking several hundred dollars), higher risk of infection, more painful for her, more prominent scarring, etc. However, if it needs stitches and you take her right away, they may need to just anesthetize her, sew it up, and send her on her way.

First, clean it out but don't use peroxide unless you dilute it half and half with water. My vet told me that full strength it's going to damage tissue. Then you need to put an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin on it and bandage it for a day or two. Don't let your dog lick it or it won't heal. If it's small, it'll heal on it's own but you need to watch it very closely for signs of infection (red and irritated looking).

You should also make sure the people at the daycare know about what happened to your dog and take steps to ensure it doesn't happen again. They should be responsible for injuries to your dog while in their care.

Take her to the vet to get a prescription in case of infection even if you do not think that there is one because I have a siberian husky and he was bit above his eye when he was a puppy by a chocolate lab and it punctured his sinuses and caused him to spray out blood every time he yalped... His nose bled for about a week from the puncture... any how, I got just amoxicilin from the vet and was giving it to him for about two weeks and the vet also trimmed the lesion (puncture) with scissors... its painful to watch but it is what needs to be done for that dog to stay healthy. Go to the vet! Good Luck!

I would watchi it for a day or so, checking for signs of infection: redness, drainage. As far as stitches go, animal bites do not usually get stitched up unless it's a gaping wound. Stitching it up would close a hole, that if it were infected, have no way to drain. And don't use peroxide, just soap and water. Peroxide destroys the skins good bacteria, which is needed to fight any infections.

a million. Stitches coming undo may bring about an infection, which will cost you alot greater then $500 to repair and if the an infection if left untreated it could reason micro organism that may at last kill the canine. 2. could no longer you borrow some funds from a chum or quite to pay for the stitches to be redone? 3. do no longer use any human products without your person vets advice as many human products are poisonous to canines and are at a various Ph for our dermis compaired to canines. So what we are able to apply for our bodies, would somewhat burn the canines dermis

Do you love your dog??? Then take her to the vets. Any puncher wound must be deeply cleaned out and the right medication given to her. Her licking it will only make it worse and cause infection to set in.
Also report to the doggie day care of this bite they have to know that one of their dogs is being agressive enough to bite another dog.

First clean it out with soap to rid the area of dirt and then with peroxide. Cover with gauze and tape the area for a day. Your dog probably won't leave it on that long but it will prevent the area from outside exposure. You shouldn't need stitches for a bite that small.but keep an eye on it. It could become infected or inflamed.

Well, I don't exactly know...It could get infected, and I wouldn't want your beautiful dog to have to have its leg amputated off. Look at it a little more and decide for yourself. If it's really worrying you so much as to have to ask us on the internet, then you probably need to go get her some stitches. Because, if I see little scratches on my pets I wouldn't worry, but if it's deeper than a scratch...Yeah, most likely take her to get stitches. Animals aren't as good of healers as humans are.

Don't let her lick it too much. I wouldn't worry too much, just watch it for the next couple of days. Why spend the money for a Vet bill?
