I am pursuing my graduate studies in the field of information studies . I came across sakai , an open souce software .The learning tool used by my school was similar to sakai. but my school uses a purchased software and not sakai. Why do universities not use free softwares and go for a purchased one to be used as their learning tool ?

Also, currently there are very few businesses working with free open-sourced software. These firms want graduates with expierience with the software they use.
