in the synoptic gospels, but John portrays him teaching salvation by faith?

Is in the bible. Man is saved by faith AND works through Jesus.

James 2:24
"You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone."

Phil. 4:17 – Paul says “I seek the fruit which increases to your credit.” Fruits (good works) increase our justification. Paul says these works increase our “credit,” which is also called “merit.” These merits bring forth more graces from God, furthering increasing our justification as we are so disposed. But the fruits, works, and merits are all borne from God’s unmerited and undeserved mercy won for us by Jesus Christ.

The bible itself shows that faith alone doesn't save you but you also have to do works.

What did Jesus' brother, James mean "When he said to work out your salvation with fear and trembling ?"

And James, Jesus' brother also said that "Faith without good words is dead."

Read the Book of James. You really think that John, or any of the other disciples were closer to Jesus than His own brother, James? Think again. Please read on, below.

Jesus said, "Many will come to Me on that day, saying Lord, Lord, did I not preach in your name, did I not heal the sick in your name, did I not raise the dead in your name." And Jesus said, "Begone from Me, into everylasting fire shall you go, for when I was sick, you did not take care of Me, when I was hungry you did not feed Me." *"Whatever you have done, to the least of these people, you have done unto Me," Jesus said.

A Christian can not be Lukewarm, riding the fence. A Christian can not Judge, Criticize, and Condemn other people {for Jesus said not to do this = Matthew 7:1-5), and expect to keep his or her free ticket of salvation, to enter heaven.

Jesus wants human beings to Love all People Unconditionally, while respecting each person's
Free Will, without Judging, Criticizing, or Condemning them. Other people have an excuse, do Christians ? Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments!" Jn. 14:15.

Faith and Good Works is the kind of Life that Jesus taught = Love all People Unconditionally as Jesus did, and you will live with a guilt free conscience, and True Peace of Mind, and Happiness.

I would have to say that your assumption in incorrect and that your question is in error. It is interesting that you ask.

The Biblical New Testament Scriptures are consistent in their "Salvation by Grace" approach. Matthew, Mark and Luke are no exception. I am almost surprised that the book of James did not come up...

I do not have time at this point to go through a lot of the texts regarding Salvation by Grace, but I can tell you that anyone who believes that Salvation is by works "...err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ." (Matt 22:29)

Because if there is salvation it only makes sense that it is by works and not faith. Heaven seems more the sort of place for a good man like Gandhi than a good Christian like Mussolini.

The earlier the gospel, the more Jesus is concerned with how you behave rather than what you believe.

Because John didn't get his information from the Q document. John was written almost two decades following the synoptic Gospels.

Jesus does not teach salvation by works but only through him does one have salvation The Bible does say that we will be known by our fruits. In other words if a person is a Christian - and I mean knowing Christ as savior and Son of God, then we will not be ashamed to tell others about Him, help others, give of ourselves for the sake of our Lord. Works alone do not get anyone to Heaven nor does it give a person salvation.
John 3:16 " For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life."
Matt. 5:16 "Let your light shie before men i such a way that they may see your good works, ad glorify your Father who is in Heaven
You see both are taught but and I could give you scripture after scripture but salvation comes through Christ and whatever works that are done should be to gloify God not ourselves.

James reconciles this apparent conflict by stating that faith naturally inspires good works. Good works do not save, because that would imply that you are doing God a favor by doing your duty -- a notion that Jesus himself expressly rejects (Luke 17:7-11).

But faith without works is a shallow faith (James 2:17 & 26).

We are saved by grace, not by works, so that no one can boast.
We are saved by grace alone. Recall that in Acts 16:31 the jailer asked Paul and Silas how to be saved. They responded, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." The jailer believed and immediately became saved.
Close to 200 times in the New Testament salvation is said to be by faith alone - with no works in sight. Consider the following:
John 3:15 tells us that "everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
John 5:24 says, "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."
In John 11:25 Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies."
John 23:46 says, "I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness."
John 20:31 says, "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
If salvation were not by faith alone, then Jesus' message in the Gospel of John - manifest in the above quotations - would be deceptive, stating that there is one condition for salvation when there are allegedly two - faith and works.
I must emphasize that we are saved by faith for works. Works are not the condition of our salvation, but a consequence of it We are saved not by works, but by the kind of faith that produces works.

Eph 2:8-10 God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this: It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Salvation comes from God but when you are on God's wavelength you tend to do works the way He would want you to.. as an example, you won't cheat on your taxes, steal from your neighbor, be unfaithful in your marriage, hurt anyone through speaking or printing gossip true or untrue. You do unto others and love them as God loves you and them. Now being human you are not perfect you can stride for perfection but you will have those moments when you don't do the right thing..that is why His forgiveness is eternal.

On the contrary Jesus DOES NOT teach salvation by works. If we could work for our salvation there would have been no need for Jesus to die on the cross and be resurrected. These things were done for our salvation.
