I know they give off very high UV rays and have damaged things in my office. I'm hesitant to use them in my house because of what I have seen. You would not notice it for years, but it seems it will occur. Has anyone who has used them for years noticed damage?

Items of concern: books, paintings, prints, sofas. I'm not doing too much good for the environment if I have to replace these things more often.

Items not of concern: carpet, and other disposable items.

I highly doubt that fluorescent bulbs fade your things, because of the glass containers that hold in the radiation while emitting its light alone. Bulbs ought to be replaced to maximize efficiency, of course, and no one should leave the same bulbs in for "years," assuming that they would even work that long. Good question!

Well I'm not sure "what" you are worried about protecting?

Every office I have ever worked in was illuminated with 4 ft fluorescents. I have these in my workshop and I put some in our rec-room some 15 years ago.

I've seen rug fading, but it was always the greatest near windows. I never noticed anything significant beyond that.

We haven't installed those bulb style compact fluorescents yet as most of our lamps have dimmer controlled bases - but I'm working on it.

If you have priceless family photographs for instance, frame them behind an archival quality glass designed for this purpose.

My wife paints the walls every 5 to 7 years, so I can't say I've noted paint fade in that span. As mentioned before my rugs take the greatest beating from the sun, followed by foot traffic. If my fluorescents are fading them, it is the dead last risk as far as I can tell from experience.

In India we always used CFL Tubes. Most of India does including the Municipal street lights. In my home in California I have changed almost all the bulbs since the Energy crises. The entire country must conserve like California does. Not only will you save on your enery bills but it will also help the environment.

well i have been using the energy saving bulbs for about 5 years and I haven't noticed any fading at all. I also wasn't aware that they put off UV rays.
