The ALT+F4 keystroke combination is assigned to the FileCloseOrExit command, which closes all of the windows of the active document one at time.


WORKAROUND
To reassign the ALT+F4 keystroke combination to the FileExit command, follow these steps: 1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
2. Click Keyboard at the bottom of the dialog box.
3. Under Commands, click FileExit.
4. Click Press New Shortcut Key, and then type ALT+F4.
5. Click Assign.
NOTE: Holding down the SHIFT key while selecting Exit on the File menu also closes all documents and quits Word.

It will close the application or anything which is running on ur screen.If u have opened many things then which one is on top it will close it.If there is nothing running then it will show u the options to "STANDY BY RESTART SHUTDOWN.
