Previous answer is nonsense. Don't be afraid of the MRI. There's nothing to it. You will lay still in a long tube and be given headphones to deal with the loud sounds. The machine constructs images of your body. A radiologist will review these to see if there are any signs of disease and send a report to your referring doctor. Persistent headache is a valid indication for MRI, as well as other examinations.

Hi there!
Back when I was in highschool (many years ago!), I was having recurring headaches that would last for days on end with no relief. My primary doctor finally sent me to have an MRI just to make sure things were ok.
I went to the outpatient center at my local hospital, and I was greeted by a friendly nurse who explained what would happen.
The whole process took about 30-45 minutes from start to end.
If you are having a contrast MRI, a nurse will start an IV where the contrast dye will be injected. They will take pictures before and after the injected so they can watch the 'flow' of the contrast material.
If you are claustraphobic or sensitive to small spaces, the MRI machine can be a bit overwhelming if you in a closed one. If your location has an open MRI, you should be fine.
I was very lucky in the fact that no blockages were found. The unfortunate fact is because there were no blockages, my doctor was unable to find a cause for my headaches..I was kinda back at square one.
I wish you all the best, and you're in my thoughts!

I've needed to have MRIs before, many of them. You are a lucky person to need one THESE days! It used to be that you barely fit inside the tube, I weigh 100 pounds and am 5'5", then, you heard this loud KNOCK from the inside of it. It was uncomfortable, at least. Still, it found my problems, exactly! Now days, the tube is made with more comfort in mind. Here, I actually hear music while I am in the tube.........it's nice. I found that my neck pain, was because I had two totally crushed disks in my neck! The surgeon immediately operated on me..........taking bones from my hip bone, and making new disks out of them. The pain stopped. Since I found out how EXACTING this MRI is, I never rely on just X-rays for things I just KNOW are really important to check out. The MRI is a wonderful machine that will really find your problem. (The X-ray of my neck, evidently, did not show the totally crushed disks C5, and C6) THAT E.R. person who did the Xrays just sent me home, saying you're fine. My doctor noticed my left arm and fingers on my left hand would not work........and KNEW what was wrong, sent me for the MRI, that showed exactly where I needed help, and the surgeon had a real map laid out for him, for my operation.
