LED's are great for direct lighting (like desklamps, under-cabinet task lighting, flashlights, or car brake lights), but for general lighting applications that need diffuse light, it seems like LED technology isn't quite there yet. We have a 0.9W LED on our porch, and it barely lights up the door handle. If anyone has had success with an LED to light a full room, I would love to know the brand so that we can switch.

Compact Florescent (CFL) bulbs do contain a little mercury, but I think they are the best we have for now. Just make sure to recycle them. IKEA now accepts old CFLs, and Environmental Defense is working with Wal-Mart to start a similar take-back program. If you can't find a store in your area to do this, check out www.earth911.org for proper disposal information. Just don't throw in your trash!!

If you want to do something dangerous to your health, use these bulbs. Guaranteed to make you ill. I never realized how strong the lobby group promoting this into legislation is. Anytime you see the government involved, somebody is getting paid off. I won't use these bulbs, they are unhealthy. Imagine the lawsuits if this is ever forced on people.

If everyone properly handles their dead bulbs, then the mercury content shouldn't be an issue.
Once they no longer work, you can return them to the stores where you bought them, and they will recylce them. Or, you can just bring them yourself to a local recycling plant.

But that is a good point.

LEDs do not produce enough light to illuminate a room.
