Depends on the state you live in. If you try several times, they norally make you wait a certain amount of time, and then try again. If you have difficulty reading for example, you can request to take an oral exam, or have someone read the test to you. Nothing will happen to you if you don't pass, you just don't get your license yet.

Well that depends on what Country you are in.
I live in Ontario, Canada and we have a different system here.
G1 then G2 then you're G. You have to pass three tests.
G1 is your written test age 16
G2 is your drivers test age around age 17
G is your freeway test age around age 18

In California you get three tries, you have to wait a full Day between each try. After three tries you pay the fee again and you get three tries, this repeats until you can pass.
If you fail 3 times good idea to take lessons (not from parents)

I live in California and took it three times. After you fail the first try, each additional try costs like $16, but you can take it as many times as you need to.

In California you can take it up to 3 times, you have to wait a week in between each try, then after the third time you must wait a few months I think.
