Are you sure you are talking about compact bulbs? They are not the long tubes. They can be super bright, I have some I use to grow plants in a deep aquarium. Hmm, I've never heard them hum. I have been attempting to replace my recessed lights with them but my wife hates the light that they cast.

I had all our lights bulbs replaced with florecent....In my mind (or not) florescent lighting makes me in a better mood.
Ours do not hum, none of them?

Plus plants love florescent lights :0)

It could be you've got bad wiring.

Also, read the label - I don't think you're supposed to use them in recessed fixtures. I'm guessing that's because you should grip them by the base when screwing & unscrewing them, rather than by the tube which could break if twisted.
