This is a common problem, especially in teens. The crypts of the tonsils are just doing their job collecting bacteria, etc.

However, the white matter -- sometimes called tonsil stones -- that collects in the crypts can have a foul odor and can contribute to bad breath. Normally, the material passes out of the crypts and is swallowed unnoticed. However, some people have extra-large crypts that tend to accumulate a large amount of the tonsil stones.

Some people can "pry" the material out with their tongues and spit it into a tissue for disposal. A few varieties of "throat irrigators" are also available to flush out the crypts. Try a web search or ask at a local pharmacy about reccomendations for oral or throat irrigators designed to clean tongues, tonsils and crypts.

They are called tonsilliths or tonsil stones. My daughter has those and uses a q-tip to push them out.
