Most dogs can be kept in for many hours at a time without potty breaks, but as with humans, it's not always a good idea to hold it that long. If your dog has the opportunity, he should go out every 2-3 hours. Are you at work all day and he's locked up? Can you get home at lunch to let him out? Do you have a friend or neighbour that can let him out during the day? Small dogs usually make their own rules. If they want out they go out. If he has to stay in all day because there is no way around it, then he'll probably be fine. If you're worried, you could litter train him like a cat.
Dogs don't need to adhere to the 'no snacking 2 hours before bed' rule unless they are obese. I feel that all dogs should be fed twice a day, as close to 12 hours apart as possible, but with small dogs, 3 times a day if possible. They have less body weight and sometimes need a boost in the afternoon. Just don't overfeed! Take the same amount of food you'd give in one feeding and split it into 2-3 feedings.
Good luck!

Maybe you should try letting it out every 6 hours or so... But if the dog starts scracthing at the door be sure to let it out. If you work every day and say its winter and you don't want dog poo all over the floor Please Don't Leave The Dog outside! Ok now on feeding I have heard from my pets vet that you shouldn't feed the dog after 10:00 p.m unless you like waking up alot in the middle of the night to let the dog poo. So really the food and poo is all tied together into one big subject.

It just depends on the dog... Some can only go 5 or 6 hours while others can go 9 hours no problem.

Your little buddy is going to tend to piddle a lot when he's a puppy. Train him on paper first. Then he'll probably need to go outside 4-5 times a day.

I recently found a stray that was a Jack Russell/ Chihuahua mix and he had a very small bladder. I let him out every five hours and he was okay.

well, they neeed to go out whenever they need to go out!
yyou cant just stop taking him out at a certain time, if he has to go out at 3:00 in the morning, you take him out!
about feeding, im assuming you mean supper?
my dog has a strict feeding time, 5:00. they will get used to a scheduel and at that time, they will eventually come to tell you its supper time! its very cute!
but if you mean treats, we never give him a treat after 11:30 pm. but thats him. get your dog on your own scheduel that works for you.
good luck! =)
