The idea of the soul as being seperate from the body is definitely not Biblical. You are right. Sadly many are swayed by the misbelief that the Bible teaches the soul as being something that lives on after.

Job 12:10
In whose hand is the soul of every living thing,
and the breath of all mankind.

The soul is just as much a part of mankind as the body.

Psalm 62:1 Truly my soul waits upon God, from Him my salvation.

Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from God.

1 Peter 2:11
Dearly Beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims,
abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.

The soul is the spirit of man where God dwells as Spirit, but to describe it the blood best describes it. There is life in the blood and the blood nourishes the entire body as does the soul nourish the entire body. The soul is just as much you as the flesh and blood body is you. Job 19:26 Job said, "From my flesh I see God." My body is the temple of the Living God.

Man cannot live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. God's breath is the life of the soul and each part of the soul is in its counterpart in the body, and is strongly bound to it. The soul has exactly the same number of limbs and blood vessels, but these are spiritual rather than physical. Blood of a dead man has no soul.
