Triple Sec can be considered a generic and inexpensive version of Cointreau. Cointreau is a premium brand of cordial imported from France. Both are considered "citrus flavored" however each have distinctive and varying flavor profiles. Each have roughly the same alcohol content and can be used interchangeably. If you can afford the expense of paying up to 4 times the amount for Cointreau as compared Triple Sec, you should.

Cointreau is more or less a premium version of Triple sec. Both have an orange taste.
Cointreau is 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume), while Triple sec tends to be around 30 proof (15% alcohol by volume).
I would say as far as recipes, you can use either one. Triple sec is less expensive, but in my opinion, Cointreau has a taste that is worth the extra cost.

You can use either one to mix drinks. The flavor is the same (orange) but since Cointreau is the original French triple sec, it cost more than the regular triple sec which is made in the U.S. usually it ranges from $20 for 375ml to $40 for the 750ml size for the Cointreau. The inexpensive but good triple sec is the Hiram Walker; it cost about $4 for 200ml to around $10 for 1 Liter bottle. Since you will need a small amount for mixture, keep in mind how many drinks you will mix it with, the kind of glass you will serve in, and most importantly how many people you will serve to.

The difference is your disposable income. Buy Cointreau in the event that you intend to serve it WITHOUT A MIXER, in a snifter, at room temperature. When you stop laughing at that idea, buy triple sec for your cocktails. On a side note, the difference between the drink recipe liquors you have seen are due to Cointreau (and it's parent company) financially assisting in the publication of the drink-recipe books that call for it specifically.

Cointreau was the original Triple Sec and still about the best. The only inexpensive copycat I've ever tasted which was/is close in flavor and the same strength is that made by Meaghers in Canada.

Basically the same thing, Triple sec tends to be cheaper, But Cointreau tends to be thicker and more flavoursome.

They are both orange flavored liquors, Cointreau is "top shelf" where as Triple Sec is "well". You can use either.
