I keep reading responses to posted answers, referring to the 72 virgins. I've done some research, and I have not found this. Is this just a myth?

Of course its a myth. There is verses in the Quran regarding untouched women by man or jinn in heaven who are for martyrs but not 72 virgins that's just something the media has picked up on and it spread like Chinese whispers.

Nothing in the Koran specifically states that the faithful are allotted 72 virgins apiece. There is a group of sayings called "hadith," which are attributed--with varying degrees of credibility--to Mohammed.

One saying states "The least [reward] for the people of Heaven is 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome of pearls, aquamarine and ruby."

The "72 virgin" thing is part of the oral tradition passed on. The Koran is only a part of the religious writings.

You could compare the oral tradition to Christian Dogma.

The Koran tells Muslims they are rewarded in paradise if they die defending Islam from infidels.

It's not in the Qur'an.

The number 72 would be a number similar to 1001 (in the Arabian Nights story), asserting a large number, but not really determining it precisely.

Good question...actually the number of virgins seems to vary, depending on who you ask and what they want you to do. I don't think it's actually a written rule, just a rumour that has taken hold among the gullable. You know...buy the rumour, sell the news.
