Lately I've noticed myself getting seconds at meals and it's something that I want to stop. For some reason the portions which used to fill me up no longer do and I feel a compulsion to keep eating even after I've had a decent meal. I've read somewhere that eating celery curbs hunger for a while, but what other foods or snacks do that?

The foods that you want are called filler foods. They are protein enriched foods. You could eat a whole box of mac & cheese and be hungry an hour later because it is all carbs. Carbs burn off quick, but protein foods stick with you so you are fuller for longer. Try a bigger portion size of meat and veggies, and smaller portion of carbs. Try to keep the meat lean, chicken, fish, etc.

I would like you to ask yourself when this second helping thing started, and link it to something that may have happened at that time. Then, I would tell you to LEARN the difference between being full and not being hungry. Those are totally different things, and I had to learn it. You sound as though you have recognized this, already, as a habit you are forming. When you are done eating the 'decent meal'..............go to the sink, scrape off any left overs, and wash the dish. Be done. Tell yourself that you are not hungry anymore.
Sometimes, you might feel as though you just NEED something sweet, and your brain says, "chocolate!". Tell your brain that an orange, or other favorite fruit will take away those need for sweets you have come over you. Celery is wonderful, since it takes more calories to chew it than it has in it. Cucumbers are great, as well. I peel mine with a peeler, then just eat them as if I were eating a banana. Bananas are full of potasium, and are about 88 calories...........they are perfect 2-3:00 snacks. If you get drowsy about this time of day, have a banana, and get your blood sugar back up! Pretty much true, is that if the veggie is green and you eat it raw.........cabbage, brocolli, like that...........you get full and you don't get a lot of fatty stuff! What to drink? Stop, stop drinking sodas, diet or not. You will be amazed if you start drinking a flavored Propel drink. Pretty soon, you will just not go anywhere without your 'water'. Drinking water is so very important in everyone's diet. The newer Propel bottles have a cap on them that closes and opens easily, so you can take it with you anywhere, and it won't drip! I love the grape flavored, and the strawberry-kiwi flavors. It was while I was visiting my brother's family, that I thought I would have gained a lot of weight. His wife is a great cook, and she cooks so MUCH! I didn't want to offend her in any way, so, I ate what she insisted I eat. The other, different, thing was that I had no carbonated drinks, no sodas for that week. She drinks ice tea, no sugar. I drank ice tea no sugar. So, I had eaten a lot more than usual, yet I had lost over five pounds when I came home and weighed! So, I kind of tested out my theory on different weeks..............no diet soda, or is diet soda o.k. with my weight? My theory, so I tested it on myself. Sure enough, everytime I did not drink diet soda, I lost weight. I used to work as a counselor for weight loss with Nutri-System. My class students LOST weight!

You can eat celery, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, carrots, basically any green vegetable you can eat all you want any time you want. Don't forget cucumbers.

Try this as well. Since starving your body will only make it hold onto fat in the long run, when you get hungry before you eat a second helping drink a full glass of water.

Another tip is to chew food longer and slower. Put fork in mouth, set fork back on plate, chew food, count to ten. Pick up fork and repeat until meal is done.

It takes about 15 minutes for your body to register that it has food and will start telling itself it is full.

Or if you have good self control, each the seconds and bust your *** even harder when you workout.

Actually water is the very best for this purpose. In the military basic training we were required to drink 2 full glasses of water before we touched any of our food or other drinks. Most everybody looses weight during basic training. Another good one to use is green tea. It actually helps to curb the appetite too. Just watch out for how much sugar or corn syrup it has as that will raise the calorie count. Also don't use milk in it as the proteins in it will bind to the antioxidants in the tea making it ineffective. Much of the time we we think we are hungry when we are actually just dehydrated. We need half of our body weight in ounces each day. If that amount is less than 64 ounces then default to the basic 8 glasses/servings everybody talks about. Then add 8 more ounces for every 20 minutes of exercise and heavy activity we do. We need one ounce for every 5mg of caffeine we consume. On hot days we need even more water. If you are getting enough you will find you won't eat as much.

Complex carbohydrates will curb hunger up to five hours. Oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber which is also complex carbohydrate at 140 calories for a serving.
Nuts at 180 caloreis for 2-3 tbls.
Cheese (1 once.) about 70-120 calories
yogurt (1 c is between 120 and 160 cal. depending on fat content.)
drinking water or tea temporarily reduces hunger.

Are you exercising more? Why has your appetite increased? You might want to get your insulin levels checked and make sure you are not pre-diabetic. Protein really does stop the hunger. Try: cottage cheese spinkled with sliced almonds and apple slices. Also: bake skinless chicken breasts with curry and broth wrapped in foil. Chicken is a good one to curb hunger, as well. Try eating hard-boiled eggs. And fiber is good. Steam veggies and put just a tablespoon of your favorite dressing on them. Also, you might want to "check in" with yourself to see if you are eating for an emotional reason - lack of somehing, (this could even be lack of sleep - people tend to overeat if they have continued raised cortisol levels). Cortisol is the stress hormone - and it can elevate an appetite. Fat free milk is good. Low fat cheese in very small portions are also good. Also, try not to go more than 2.5 hours without eating something. This way, you can more easily keep your blood glucose levels stable, rather than spiking and falling. Of course, stay away from refined foods (anything white - chips, breads, etc.)

Take care.

Any good fruit or vegetable will give you a temporary filling feeling
and good nutrition at the same time. Nuts give us long term
fulfillment and they are wonderful if you avoid eating to many,
they are loaded with calories. A trick I recommend is lots of water
often which has many good values only one of which is the feeling of fullness. You should think also about some stress
management if your under pressure which is generally the real
underlying cause of that increased appetite

I have heard that eating some sort of "good fat" about 30 minutes PRIOR to eating your meal keeps you from overeating during meals. Try a handful of almonds before your meal (30 minutes before you eat) and see if that helps.

You can eat any low calorie food, they all help with hunger. But I would try to shrink your stomach back up first, which will mean being hungry a few days.
