Here is Ubuntu Linux; http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download?action=show&redirect=download
I use Ubuntu 6.10 and it work well. I just take time to learn any new OS, even Windows Vista.
Now when I downloaded the ISO file, I put it on my Hard Drive, it not work as an ISO File. The Next page I give you is Ubuntu too, Ha!
Go here; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
On this page it tell how to Burn the ISO file to a CD using "Infra Recorder". This run in windows and is free. It Burn your ISO Files to the CD as a Bootable CD. Then you can Run as a live CD to see how it work with your Computer. Then if you fell comfortable with how everything go, you can Install as a Dual-Boot. Windows and Linux. Or, you can do a full install and do away with Windows.
What I did was a Dual-Boot. After I was confident using Linux and that all the software I needed was avaliable, I started over and Erased Windows completly and did a full install of Ubuntu Linux. I will assume Knoppix work similar.
Remember; with a Dual-Boot the first thing you get is a Screen to choose which OS you want. Linux will be your Default OS and start if you not scroll down to Windows.
My Nephew uses Knoppix and he says it works well for him.

It looks like Knoppix is not able to load to graphic mode on your computer. normally this is because of an unsupported driver for the video card :(

as for other live CD Linux distributions none of them currently come supporting 3-D effects out of the box.

As for standard install Linux systems, I've had no problems getting effects to work with Fedora, mandriva, and Suse. The installation process for 3-D effects with unbuntu is a little more complicated. But on the other side I have found unbuntu to be the most functional and easy to manage distribution to use as a desktop system.

If you want an easy Operating System with 3d effects go For Macintosh OS X or for Windows XP / Windows Vista.

GNU/Linux are made for experience computer user and if you have no clue about what is DR-DOS i don't thing GNU/Linux is for you.
Why exactly do you want GNU/Linux for ?

BTW try Ubuntu for linux beginners : http://www.ubuntu.com/

Knoppix is between the distributions with an exceptionally reliable recognition. yet your question is impossibly enormous. Like 'how do I restoration a battleship'. Or 'a thank you to repair MAC OSx. So in case you attempt to study approximately Knoppix i'm specific a lot of human beings would be waiting to respond to questions as you come back up with them. i'm one in all them :)
