I have asked the question myself when I was thinking about buying a used car. I have the choice of a Passat and Mondeo, but also I have considered An older A6 (still the 97-03 style) and also the Mercedes E Class (1997) and also the previous style BMW 5 Series. However by going Ford or VW, you could have a newer car for the same sort of money. However I would suggest it really depends on your budget or whether a used or new buy. The new Mondeo comping out in June is an excellent looking car and is featured in the new James Bond movie. the Passat is equally pretty, but would argue that it is a lot more upmarket. However if you are looking for a used buy, I would recommend the Skoda Superb. It is the same as the Passat, looks the same but is longer and more spacious. Also Skoda is one of the mmost reliable brand at the moment, way more reliable than the VW. I have test drove both Passat and Mondeo in the diesel guise (PD100 and TDCi 115). Powerwise similar, I am not a fast driver, but both have excellent torque. However the Mondeo Deisel is super quiet. It really depends on who you are, if you want good interior quality, go for the Passat, very tightly screw together, the Mondeo is comparably flimsy when standing next to the Passat.

ignoring the above, if you read enthusiasts' mags like What Car, they'll tell you Mondeo is excellent car, so is Passat, but at price differential, Mondeo will be better buy unless as someone says you want to trade in within 2 years in which case there's nothing in it.
I have a VW Golf because my wife wanted VW over Ford. Big mistake. VW is very very over-rated and treats its customers badly. VW holds its value until you try to trade in at a VW dealer when you will find that unfortunately you chose the wrong colour, the wrong model, and that's why its lost 60% of its value.

I owned a 2001 Mondeo and then traded it in for a 2001 Passat. Big mistake.

There's nothing wrong with a Passat other than the fact that itsa a saloon! The Mondeo comes as a Hatchback which makes a world of difference when you're trying to load up with all sorts of cr@p.

Those who answer Passat are simply badge snobs. The mondeo is cheaper to run, better to drive and more reliable. Why do you think germans now shun the Passat for the Mondeo?.
VW are in a bad phase at the moment with regards to reliability.

VW Passat holds its value and has a great reputation is lovely to drive and feels really safe. But The Mondeo is also a very beautiful car to drive and it is also fun eps the Turbo D and you get to save money on fuel.

If you're buying brand new, I'd wait a few months, the new Mondeo is coming out (see whatcar.com).

The Passat has a better image and will hold its value better, but I'm afraid I find Volkswagons plain boring to drive. Despite the hype, I'm not convinced their mechanical reliability is any better than Ford.

If it was me, I would not choose either. A Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord make more sense.

with todays technology all cars are built very well so you ahve to look at all the angles i.e the cost of running the car, price of parts
petrol consumption, in my many years as a car mechanic i have worked on all types of cars makes and models and i also worked at vw for about 6 years but i always drove ford vehicles. cos they were cheaper. me personally would choose the passat because of the german engineering.hope this helps
