It could be "yo sabía" or "yo supe".
"Yo sabía" is more like "I used to know", but it's also used after something has happened and then you say "I knew it" = "Yo sabía".
I knew this was going to happen = Yo sabía que esto iba a pasar.

But if you say:
I knew it from the first moment = Lo supe desde el primer momento.

So it depends on the context. "Yo supe" is something that happened in a particular moment. "Yo sabía" is more like a process.

It depends on how you want to address the past. In Spanish, if it was a ongoing action in the past you would use the imperfect. If it was a one-time event in the past, you would use the past tense (preterite).

Imperfect: Yo sabia (to have known something)
Past Tense: Yo supe (to have found out something)
