Everyone whines that it's tradition to wear white, in the Victorian era brides wore their best dress, black, pink, blue, red, white was not a common choice. White was only worn after Queen Elizabeth wore a white dress to her wedding. It was a trend the queen set, if she had worn silver then everyone would wear silver to immitate her. Puffy white dresses are not for eveyone, some brides have style and want to wear a black cocktail dress to have a chic wedding. Cookie cutter weddings are boring and so are all the identical puffy a-line strapless dresses everyone wears. There is nothing wrong with a black wedding dress, it's a choice based on personal taste. Why does everyone assume if you wear black you are a goth or going to a funeral, black is a powerful color that's why professionals have closets fully stocked with black suits.

I agree.... which is why I shall not be having a conventional wedding. I'm going for anything other than white. Black is cool.

You seem like a very strong opininated person that doesnt care what others think. So why do you care what people think of you wearing a white dress. Society has placed these guidelines that everyone feels need to be followed. I wore a white dress on my wedding day. Not because of Queen Elizabeth (I didnt even know about that until just now that I read it). I wore white because in my culture white represents purity and purity is a sign of love and respect for your partner.

Wear what you please. Its your wedding day. Just dont listen to all the comments people make because there will be comments. But just let them go and enjoy your day.

I think it's stupid that everyone thinks a 'wedding dress' has to mean a 'white dress'. When I get married, I'm thinking of a red dress-my favorite color. Wearing a wedding dress in a color other than white, to me, shows power and the ability to stand up to "tradition" and make a statement.

And by the way, I agree totally with you on the white, strapless puffy a-line dresses.. There's no originality!

Finally, someone else who shares the same opinion.. :)

Black denotes seriousness, as you describe its a powerful color, very professional. The modern image of a bride is a more innocent, dare I say virginal look and less of the business, power or vamp look that black says. Color has important messages to say and for a wedding black is unconventional to the point that its easy to have your choice become the focus of attention instead of you or your wedding. You won't necessarily be considered chic, since chic denotes a knowledge of whats appropriate to the occasion and as a bride you may like it, but its no more appropriate than an orange jumpsuit with purple sneakers, or going nude, both have been done, but to what effect? There are fabulous slipper satin bias cut gowns that are sophisticated and elegant without demanding an opinion on the part of the guest. It doesn't even have to be white, possibly a silver or pale gold? But red or black for better or for worse carry their own connotations that must be considered.
Wouldn't you rather have them talk about the beautiful bride and the great food and the lovely flowers than have the first thing out of their mouths be MY GOD she wore BLACK!!!

I totally understand. I am a bride to be and I had planned a Medevil themed wedding BUT then my fiancees family found out and said if I wore a Black dress they were not coming because they thought it was wrong. Keep that in mind, talk to family and see what they think...unless you dont care....its your wedding and you should be able to express yourself however you want to...its up to you. Good luck.

Black represents mourning. It was predominantly worn at funerals. White represents purity. In past generations, Sex before marriage was highly frowned upon. Therefore, people wore white wedding dresses, to show they were pure. This then became a tradition.

However, if you are getting married yourself, it's your day, wear what you like. These days it is less likely to be frowned upon, as through time the superstition has faded. Good luck.

How about this?

Wear a Beige/creme, purple, or skyblue, colored wedding gown for the wedding, and then change into a black cocktail dress for dancing and fun. You can have best of the both worlds!

Why do you care what other people think? If you want to wear a black dress to your wedding do it and be proud. It's YOUR wedding. I wore brown velvet on my wedding day and I looked absolutely ravishing. :-) Did people make harsh coments about it behind my back? I'm seriously asking because I have no idea. :-) Don't care, life's too short.

Because everyone thinks if you don't follow tradition you are strange or the relationship won't work out... I think its silly to follow each tradition to the letter but that is what floats my boat. If someone wants to follow it they can. If someone tells me what I "need" to do or not do on my wedding they can fly a kite.

Ignore the critics and enjoy your day your way!

You can't change the way people react. People will react badly to a bride in black. Your choice.

(P.S. Queen Elizabeth lived three hundred years before the Victorian Era, and was never married.)
