When you buy a car from a private owner do they keep their license plates on for you? Or do you have to buy them yourself? Does it cost money? If you have to buy the plates yourself won't a cop pull you over for not having plates? Can you get em anywhere for free like the junkyard?

It depends on the State you are in. Call the DMV in your state. Some stay with the car and some stay with the owners and are transferred to their next or new car.

Every State and Country has different rules regarding license plates. Contact your local licensing agency for the details for where you live. In California, the plates remain on the car from owner to owner except for vanity plates. If you purchase a car without plates, you must obtain a temporary operating permit from the DMV before operating it.

License plates stay with the car. However if they're really old or junky you just buy the new ones when you go get the title transferred (which is when you pay sales tax as well.). Plates are like $8 from the DOL so there's no need to go to a junk yard.

No they don't. Typically, you can keep the plate that is on the vehicle; however, once you go to the DMV and register the vehicle in your name, you will recieve a new sticker for the plate, and you will have to pay the registration fee.

However, you also have the option of getting a brand new plate, but that is slightly more expensive, because you'll pay for the plate and the registration sticker.

It should be the same everywhere in the U.S., but check with your DMV office.

Here in California, the plates go with the car unless they are "personalized" plates that the owner pays extra for.

If he does not want to keep them, then you (the buyer) are given the option of paying the extra fee and keeping them on the car or being issued new standard plates.

License plates are a sign that you have registered the car with the state. You have to "buy" them at your state's designated agency. License plates are sometimes transferrable to another vehicle that YOU own, but typically you cannot transfer your license plates to another owner if you buy/sell the vehicle.

It depends on the state you live in. Each has their own set of rules. In California the plates go with the vehicle. Check your state's website for that information.
