Taking the Hunter Safety course is where to start. Spend you off season scouting out a good tree for your stand. Also it is good to practice putting up your stand before you take it in the woods the first time. Make sure you are sure how to get it up and secure before you try using it in the woods. I have a rifled barrel on my 870 and prefer to use Winchester Platinum tip rounds. If for some reason I cannot find those I will use Winchester Supreme Gold. Last season My friend let me try one of his Remington Copper Solids, they lacked the expansion and knock down power of the Winchester rounds. If your barrel is not rifled I would use good ole Remington Sluggers. For the Sabots I use 2 3/4 inch but on Sluggers I like the 3 inch. As far a strategies scouting is your best bet. Try to be as low impact as possible. Watch wind direction, talcum powder works good for days with little or no wind. Most of all every time I hunt I try to learn something new about deer and how they react to different things. If you don't have the best of luck the first time just keep trying, but most of all have fun and be safe.

1) Take the state Hunter Safety course.
2) Use 3" rifled slugs if you are hunting from a stand, remember to take out the plug
3) Read some articles on deer hunting.

Since you live in Indiana, you are required to use a shotgun for hunting deer.

Buy some Sabot slugs, but that also means that you would have to buy a slug barrel. I hunt in Inidana every year, trust me the Sabot rounds won't let you down.

The Brenneke design is probably a little better, and the rifled Foster style is most popular slug. Try them on paper and see which you like. If you're asking about how to hunt, it's probably best to find an experienced hunter to act as mentor.

Start with the Indiana basic hunter safety education course. While taking this class, look for adults who show an interest in helping you learn and ask them for any and all advise and training they can give you.
