Well, at the very least, they hold his ring. They're also part of the wedding and are getting to participate. Typically they have the responsibility of helping/throwing the shower.

They are, in fact, optional, but someone will probably be offended if they're not chosen.

Typically you only need a maid of honor and not all the other bride's maids. The maid of honor acts as your witness as does the groom's best man. You have to have 2 witnesses for the wedding. Roles she would play can include throwing you a wedding shower, keeping track of what gifts and from whom you received them,...being your right arm. She does little things like holding your flowers during the ceremony and fixing your veil, your dress and train, if you have a long one. Most of the wedding planning always falls to the bride, so your maid of honor helps you wherever you need her and whenever. Just remember that and the stress that inevitably comes with a wedding will be lessened if you rely on her to help out. Remember that and pick her wisely. Happy wedding !!

The Maid of Honor is an unmarried woman (Matron of Honor is married). They usually throw you your bridal shower and bachlorette party. Also, the maid of honor holds the grooms rings and gives it to you when its time to exchange rings. The maid of honor can help you with planning, go to bridal shows with you, go with you to your trial run with hair, help you get ready on the big day, etc. They also sign your marriage certificate as a witness. But this doesnt always have to be the case. Im getting married the day after tomorro (ahh..) and my 10 year old daughter is my only bridesmaid so Im calling her my maid of honor even though she hasnt done any of the above. (my dad is going to sign the marriage cert as a witness in place of my daughter). Naming someone maid of honor is a usually a huge honor to the woman you ask to fill that role and should be a woman you are close to like a sister or best friend.. or a daughter depending on your age.

Hope this helps some.

The Maid of Honour (Or matron on honour if she is married) is simply there to be your help for the day and also for the lead up to the wedding. She will organise your bachelorette party and kitchen tea if you have one. She will also help organise the bridesmaid dresses and hair and make up. On the day she simply tries to make sure that the bride is as relaxed as possible. She helps the bride get dressed and makes sure her dress is sitting well before the ceremony and is just kind of a helper for the day. She also organises getting the gifts back to the brides house and getting a suitcase to the hotel for the wedding night.
You dont have to have one if you dont want, its simply a title and recognition of your closest friend or sister or whatever.
Good luck for your big day!

Maid of honors are the bride's lifeline. THey usually help with details (booking venues, picking up centrepieces, phoning deadbeat RSVP'ers, etc.) They organize the bachelorette party, help pick the dress and usually coordinate the bridesmaids for dress fittings, etc. My sister was my maid of honor and the day before my wedding - every phone call was directed to her. So when my wedding coordinator phoned asking which side of the church to put the signing table on, my sister dealt with it all so I didn't have to stress. Maid of Honor is a huge responsibility. Below is a complete list of duties:

She's your "go to " girl. You only have one "maid of honor". The others are bridesmaids. Traditionally, the bridesmaids are your friends who would help you get ready (dressed, hair, make-up) on your wedding day. The maid of honor holds your hand and is the primary one that plays interference for you in the days before and on the wedding day itself. She's the one who is in charge of the brides desires and making sure people are following the rules.

They arrange for the bridal shower. They're responsible for making sure that everyone knows what their role is (at least out of the girls). She also holds the groom's ring for the bride. Also, if you have a long train, she's supposed to be the one to make sure that it always looks its best and isn't crooked or whatever.

You need to go to The Knot website, that will answer all your questions. MOH helps you with everything and throws yor shower, it's usually your best girlfriend. I think it's important to have them for support.

Maid of honor helps you with EVERYthing! She helps you make decisions, confirms reservations for you, keeps you sane, hosts the bridal shower, and anything else you need help with. Of course, you don't have to have one if you don't want one, but they are a godsend, believe me.
