because windows media player doesn't have every codec to play every movie file. try downloading VLC player, its free and it plays almost everything!

In its default state, Windows MEdia Player only plays a limited set of media... such as WMA files. Great title for such a useless and annoying piece of software, eh? Cons you into thinking it actually has some use! Use VLC instead - its a proper player:

Make sure you only download movies that are free from copyright! :)
