Is it just an exchange of cash or do they ask you your identity and so on? Do you have to tell them or can you give an alias?

In California, you MUST fill out a form listing the seller's info AND the buyers info and turn it in to the DMV.

This protects the seller if the buyer does not register the car promptly and gets parking tickets.

Trust me, I found out the HARD way that this form is important.

To cover yourself you'll want a bill of sale and the car title. The bill of sale would usually include the buyer's name....in case there are any troubles, so an alias would not be good.

You could, theoretically, get a cashiers check or cash and not have to give the seller your name at all.

I've bought and sold many cars privately. No one has ever asked to see my identity.
