It is the difference in the shape of their heads. Deer head chi's have the slim neck and body while apple head chi's have the thick neck and body.

There are several different, I don't know what you would call it but all kinds of shapes & sizes. Some are breed specially for a specific trait, be it head size, neck size, head shape, regular, tiny, mini etc. Some are breed by BYBers who toss two dogs together and hope for the best. These little guys have a cocktail of genes with a combination of recessive and dominate genes that can cause serious health, structure and mental problems.

All I'm trying to say is that there are so many different variations of the breed do to the combining of unknown genetics,........... but the product that will sell.

To keep the small size there is a lot of inbreeding and line breeding, so be ware of what you are really getting. Be very very cautious. It is buyer be ware.

Best thing to do is look for dogs with Pedigree papers. They are your best bet.

The AKC doesn't show the Chihuahua as 2 separate types or breeds but we Chi fanatics know there are 2 types;
the apple head: shorter, round head, thick neck
the deer type: taller, longer head & snout, long neck
