You want to find out whether there are any viruses going around the hospital that could have contributed to his downfall.

If you think this was brought on by the hospital's inadequacy then contact a solicitor and take them to court

This is very upsetting - you should check for any infection, particularly as the operation impacted on his kidney. Urinary tract infections are very frequent and severe urinary tract infections can cause confusion, memory loss and dementia! Sounds extreme, but it is very true. Older people whose minds start to wander routinely have urine tests as part of the diagnosis, as infections there are often the cause of brain problems.
I can't think of any other tests that could be done and I hope that the hospital is trying everything they can. Sometimes an operation, and anaesthetic, can cause severe shock to a body and just trigger something that was waiting to happen. Perhaps in this case.
If his father isn't long for this world, then the best you can do is comfort your friend, prepare him for this loss and tell him to say all the things he would ever want to his dad, before it's too late, so that there are no regrets. Sadly, death is inevitable for us all but your friend has the opportunity to say these things to his dad, rather than have his dad taken from him suddenly with never the opportunity to have this talk.
Good luck, be strong. Your mate is lucky to have such a caring friend as you.

Was he given enough oxygen during the operation? If not this could have caused brain damage. It is very difficult to find out from the hospital if this is what happened but a lawyer may be able to get access to his medical file and find out for you. If not then it may just be a co-incidence that he has had the misfortune that the demintia has kicked in at this time. As far as I know there is no cure for dementia but there is a drug that can slow down the process if it has not progressed too far. I don't know the name but a doctor could tell you. You have my deepest sympathy, it is a terrible tragedy.

First forget about your friends and be good to yourself and family(or closest loved ones). Second you should know that it isnt over just yet, because of the incredible advances made in just the last few years. Cancer is uncontrolled cell division and even if it has reached major organs it STILL can be reversed. Drink a gallon of Matcha Green Tea a day and follow the advice of your docs. Tonight I'll from my heart pray for you because I remember crying when I went thru something similar.

Oh no, I'm sooooo sorry about this. It's just so unfair when people get so sick. I really do wish that I had something more constructive to say other than how desperately sad I feel for you and your friend/family............ Best thing you can do is to be there for your friend and dad and just be the best possible friend that you eva can be. That's all they need from you, just be there when they need you to be and they will draw from your strength and love. God Bless you all.

PEACE

I think one should not give up hope as long as his Vitals are working,
I will advise you for alternate medicine/s, as well. This is an option we have left, and we will pray for his early recovery.
