I would like you know EXACTLY what turned you away from being a Christian and what you EXPECTED from Christianity in the first place? I know this is a lot to ask, but I really would like to know. If you only want to bash Christianity, don't bother to answer.

It never turned me away from Christianity for I believe in Source Energy, Creator, God, Yahweh, Elohim, Allah, The Big Kahuna, All That Is, I AM That I AM.

It's just Dogma that is man"s downfall.

This answer is not about "Right or Wrong, or Bashing.
Why? What exactly turns people away from being a Christian?
It takes all kinds of people to make a world and we have them.
Mother nature, in it's infinite variety, produces people that have an innate desire for religion Agnostics do not have the same imaginative response, and do not embrace any organized religious doctrine.
What was expected from Christianity in the first place?
A search for knowledge. A logical spiritual, emotional satisfying answer to why we are here, what is our purpose, rules to live by, hereafter, etc, etc.
A grain if truth is better than no truth at all.

Your question answers your own question in a way. Organized religion has been the cause of more murders, wars and segregation among us fellow earthlings than anything else throughout time. Don't think so??? Just read the paper or watch the news. Or bring up someone else's religious beliefs to a group of people. You already assumed someone out there would bash Christianity. I was born into a Christian family but I do not believe in a bible put together by past Roman leaders with dozens of testaments purposely left out and the 4 remaining edited where need be to fit their needs.
I believe Jesus was an enlightened chosen leader with great insight. He spoke in terms people could understand due to the lack of knowledge 2000 years ago. It is time people put together all of the resources we have today and not take the bible so literally or any other religious document for that matter that was written for people THOUSANDS of years ago. How do dinosaur bones fit into all of this?? Imagine if Jesus knew about dinosaurs and he tried to explain this to his people? OR what about evolution? They would have thought he was nuts!!
I consider myself a Spiritual person for these exact reasons. I do not want to be associated with any religion anymore. I will live my life trying to be the best person I can be and learn the lessons I need to learn in this life.

Agnosticism isn't always about turning away from Christianity or any other religon for that matter. Myself, I never expected anything from Christianity or any other religon for that matter.

In my case, it was how I was brought up. Religon was a non-topic in my house. It just was discussed except for when we (my brother and I) were exposed to it in a variety of ways throughout our childhood. We were never told that a god did or did not exist. It was left to our own devices. If we asked if a god exists, my parents would offer their opinions, but state that they were only opinions, not facts.

As somebody who appreciates a variety of cultures, which, by nature, includes a variety of religious perspectives, I cannot by any stretch of the imagination consider one religon or philosphy to be right.

And as a student of formal logic, I realize there is no point in trying to prove one right or wrong, or prove the existence or non-existence of a god. It is an impossible proof. Yet, people continue fight and die over these arguments, which seems senseless to me.

I hope this sheds some light on a different perspective.

Well first off, I've never believed even when dragged to church as a child. I would not get up in front of the congregation and accept a human being as my 'savior', I walked out on my baptism, and when the the 'good' Reverend (who happened to be committing adultery at that time.. imagine that....) told me that my pattern of sin was set for life and I had no freewill I walked away never to return.

After that I explored various faiths and became a Wiccan for many years and in the past few years have considered myself agnostic.

You may see that as 'bashing' christianity but that was my experience and it is what it is.

Wow, it's nice to have a question addressed to me for a change.

I never expected anything from christianity.Of any religion or worldview I expect that it be true, to the best of my knowledge -- obviously -- or I have no reason to adopt it. I wasn't raised christian, and although I considered the possibility (seriously, for about five years) that it could be true, I cannot believe in or follow a religion that considers not just actions, but thoughts evil (as a writer and artist I value my imagination above all else); nor could I see any reason why truths could not be surrounded by errors; why the catholic church could not be corrupt or why protestent interpretations of the bible could not be likewise in error; or why I should trust any institution (run by humans and prone to the abuse of power, as all human institutions are) over my own experience and even my own intuition I may not know everything, but "whose judgement should I judge by if not my own"?
Hope that's the sort of answer you're looking for!

I was a Christian for 15yrs. I got over it, because I stopped believing I was worthless, helpless and useless without Jesus. I read and became educated I picked up philosophy, psychology and history books. I read the origins of Christianity (i even went to a Christian College) I saw the subjectivity of it all. You are born into your religion, you are taught your religion by family and your community. There is no one truth. I also wanted to stop feeling guilty about just being a human. Human nature is a very real thing that Christianity tries to repress out of fear. Christianity is nothing more than the synthesis of other religions to keep the masses in check...look at your religion today, all they preach is "Prosperity doctrine" which goes directly against the teachings of Jesus. It is a man made religion, with all the faults of man...

It is superstition at its finest, fear and repression for the masses...
Life without Jesus is the greatest. No more repression, fear, guilt. I am happy and at peace.

Kill your God, Free your mind.
-Amen

There is an awful lot to swallow that makes absolutely no sense and, well, shouldn't.

Just the fact that God came down incarnate just to sacrifice himself to appease......well, himself,
is utterly ridiculous.

Have you ever studied astronomy?
It seems SO implausible that our teeny speck of a planet in a billion oceans of universe was created just so God can 'test' his special creature's souls in a reward punishment game.

I'm sorry, if you think that is "bashing",
but what do you expect when you ask what turned you away from Christianity, I mean, obviously it's not going to be good.

I just find it so outrageous, more and more, that grown adults believe in virgin birth, god coming to earth from 'heaven', only believers getting in heaven--by believing EXACTLY as they do--Catholics believe in evolution, But fundamentalist Christians who are CERTAIN theirs is the absolute truth deny the ENTIRE scientific communities findings over 150 of the MOST enlightening years in humanities history-=- OUT FRIKEN RAGEOUS>,
Jesus not having ANY blood relatives??that's strange..
And a whole heaping pile full of other crap that lists a mile long.

Nothing turned me away, its more like being turned to something.
There is no proof of fact in any religion.
You seem to consider Christianity as the only religion worthwhile. Millions of people disagree with you (Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Agnostics Atheists and so on....). Yes the choice of no religion is still a spiritual belief and what ever choice is made is a personal one and needs to be respected.

I expected nothing from Christianity. I feel the concept of God is merely that, a concept. All religions were created by man. Thus, so is God.

I think it's a mental creation based on centuries of zealots and their enthusiasm for their own personal beliefs. Nowadays, it's hard to find something to believe in. Religion has torn WORLDS apart. Right now it's killing thousands in Africa & the Middle East. I don't need to find something to blame for the evils in the world. I don't need to pray to make good things happen. I can make things happen for myself, that's all I can count on.
