I started wheezing about 2 years ago. I am overweight, but have been since I was 20 and never had a wheezing problem. I moved to Scotland 5 years ago and think that might have something to do with it. My hubby thinks it's because of my weight. I was wondering if there is any merit in his belief. I don't think so. My asthma is triggered with excercise, so walking gets me breathless, so I don't do it any more than I have to. I know I have to get out more and walk, but when you walk slower than a pensioner and can't catch your breath it is easier to stay in.

Pulmonary function tests are a mainstay of managing patients with asthma. Doctors at Audie Murphy VA Hospital are seeing an increasing number of people with the disease, and many of them are overweight.

"And what we found in our study, that 58 percent of adults who have asthma in this region are obese. And unfortunately, 28 percent of children with asthma in our area are obese," said Jay Peters, a pulmonologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

That mirrors the results of a study published by the National Jewish Research Center in Denver . The study shows being overweight puts you at 50 percent greater risk of developing asthma, and if you're obese, your risk is two-fold.

"So, we feel pretty strongly that obesity may be a major factor in either precipitating asthma, or causing asthma not to get better," Peters said.

Obesity causes labored breathing, but not asthma
by Mike Adams

Health experts say thousands of overweight Australians may be receiving treatments for asthma they do not have. A new study shows while obese people do have changes in their airways, it is not asthma, and taking asthma medication will not really help their symptoms. Obese people have decreased lung function because their organs are compressed, says Dr Grey King. Medical experts remain divided on whether obesity can cause asthma.

* Health experts say thousands of overweight Australians may been misdiagnosed with asthma.
* A new study says while obese people do have changes in their airways, it is not asthma and taking asthma medication will do little to help their symptoms.
* Researchers at Sydney's Woolcock Institute examined 300 people in their 20s and 30s.
* The head of imaging at the institute, Dr Greg King, says they found those patients carrying extra weight had reduced lung function because their organs were compressed.
* "We were looking for a mechanism as to why obese patients might complain of wheeze and one of those reasons we suspected was having very narrow airways," he said.
* Despite having similar symptoms, what the overweight patients did not have was asthma.
* And doctors say taking anti asthma medication would not help and could harm them.
* "Treating them with asthma drugs is going to be useless and in fact it's going to increase the likelihood of side effects," Dr King said.
* Dr King believes some overweight patients may have been incorrectly diagnosed with asthma, when it is really their weight causing the problems.
* Adam Hinchliffe does have asthma and is also battling a weight problem.
* Doctors say it is making his breathing more difficult.
* "It's been put to me that the best way to go forward from here to is reduce weight, improve exercise in whatever works for you, but that is the best thing you can do," Mr Hinchliffe said.
* Medical experts remain divided about whether obesity can cause asthma.
* Doctors say these findings suggest it is not the case.

Asthma is not 'caused' by being overweight, however it can be made worse by excess weight.

It is often made worse by smoking, smoky air, damp air, dust. In fact anything that can restrict the airways can induce wheezing.

A doctor's opinion and advice should be sought, neither problem will go away without attention.

If you were prescribed a rescue inhaler then they'll want to know when the last time you had the rx filled and probably a note from your doctor saying that you no longer have asthma.
