Back in the day, it was a common notion that the woman was the kind of "property" to be passed on from the father to the husband; so she would abandon her father's name and take on her husband's name. Nowadays, it's just tradition. Many women choose to keep their own names, me being one of them. It really is a personal choice - to many, it is a meaningful way to express their love and committment; to others, it's nothing but a nuissance.

In almost all cultures women submit to the men after marriage, and the men are the dominent ones as well as the bread earner. Therefore, by tradition the men get to keep their last names and therefore, the lineage. In the Chinese culture, this can be reversed if the brides family has a much greater social status than that of the grooms', after paying up some sum of money.

It used to be a tradition that was followed 100%. Now some families keep separate last names for husband and wife. Others use hyphenated pairings of both last names. The world has gotten more complicated in therms of knowing who is attached to whom.

For what it's worth, I just took my husband's last name and it's not expensive, but it is a bit of a hassle. I liked the tradition that it represents, and I like that people now call me "Mrs..." when we're together. For me, it's been a fun expression of being married.

It's actually tradition. It goes back to a man basically giving the woman his last name to show ownership. Now days women are starting to hyphenate their last name or drop their middle name and keep both last names.

As for me......I am so ready to get rid of my last name!! I can't wait!

i think it goes back to the man owning the woman. I can't decide whether to take my fiance's name or not. I've had mine for 30 years and I"m pretty attached to it. But I want to have the same last name as my kids.

Tradition. I kept my maiden name as my middle name because I didn't want to totally give it up.

She doesn't. I've been married over a year and haven't changed my name. Too expensive and too much of a hassle. We know we're married - we dont need a name change to prove it.
