Get a Cannon is all I have to say! They are the best selling and the best camera company in the world. And also get a camera from B&H Photo, they sell cameras cheap and some with special kits!

Pick your camera here! (Canon site)

And buy your camera here! (B&H Photo site)

If you are willing to spend $250, an awesome camera at $20 you don't want as per one of your answerer's. A camera with not just the usual zooms of 3X and 4X optical zoom would be one I recommend. The Fugi FinePix S5200. Back in Dec I paid $238- at Beach Camera. It's 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom and makes excellent 8X10s when enlarged. Great on batteries. Only drawback, a bit big. ISO 64-1600; shutter speed 1/2000 second.
Hope I helped and not confuse you. Check Website dpreview.com Also as one answer eluded about buying at B&H Photo...they are excellent along with
Beach Camera, Adorama, Tri-State, and Abe's of Maine.

if you didn't try this already :)
this website gives you free tips and product ratings
supposed to be consumer oriented :)
I tried it with a few products and was satisified
consumerreports.com is not all free but if you're planning on buying a few things, it's worth subscribing for a moth for $5.95!so you can have access to their database of rated products :)
good luck,
