Read the directions that come with the kit. It all different depending on the type of lift you are installing.....Any Reputable company that manufactures lift kits will have very detail oriented instructions.
2" lift kit AKA "leveling kit" Just uses spaces or replace coil springs in the front to get rid of the factory rake. So the truck sits level front to back
body lift requires removing the bed, body and bumper and installing spacers that sit between the body mount on the frame and the body or bed. and they usually have brackets to lift the bumper up to factory looks.
suspension lifts require take apart the front suspension and add taller cross members for the control arms and the rear usually is a block between the leaf spring and axle.
All kits are a little different and have pros an cons....do some research and read the installation instructions to find one that encompasses your desire for a lifted rig.

Over simplified version for 2" lift in 84 Chevrolet Truck :
Jack the truck up and place on jack stands. Remove the front springs and install the coil spacers above the springs. Reassemble and install new front shocks.
Remove the rear spring shackles from the differential housing. Reassemble using the new lifting blocks and shackles and shocks.

I'm assuming you mean a suspension lift. When you buy a kit, it comes with directions.
You can do the work, but before you buy, make sure you have the proper tools.

Lift Kit is around $750 and the Tires and wheels around $2000 so if your going to make it nice and if your going to make it great it will cost around $5000.
