This is more complicated than it appears, as the answer is different depending upon where you live.
On the Mexico/US border it's pretty much what you would expect: first floor = primer piso.
Most other places, however, the first floor is the second floor. This is also true in France; I don't know about the rest of Europe.
In some places, like Barcelona, it gets even more complicated. There, as I recall, you normally had to climb two stairways to get to the first floor.

first floor is primer piso or more commonly planta baja in the U.S.
second floor is segundo piso
I only took 3 years of spanish though so I could be wrong!

piso is more for flats, and planta for shops
