When he knew that he would..??? Why didn't JESUS stop him then ?? This is inspired by a question I saw on P&S a while ago. I found it to be quite intriguing and I've thought about this and now I would like to know that when JESUS himself KNEW had "PREDICTED" that Peter would DENY him then why didn't he stop him ??Why did He allow this to happen ???

Free will, plus he knew Peter well. Peter was the disciple that was usually bolder- first to speak up, and first to be corrected/reprimanded. Jesus undoubtedly knew what an important lesson this would be for Peter. If you'll compare that account to the account when Peter next saw Jesus (after the resurrection), you'll see some peculiar similarities.
1. When he denied Jesus, Peter was standing in the crowd around a charcoal fire. Charcoal was sort of a luxury back then. Peter denied Jesus 3 times, then the rooster crowed, then Jesus looked at Peter. Peter ran off, stricken with grief.
2. Jesus appeared on the beach while the disciples were out fishing. Peter jumped into the water and swam to Jesus instead of waiting until the fishing nets were brought in and the boat was brought into shore. Jesus was sitting next to a charcoal fire. His first words to Peter were, in effect, "Do you love me?" He asked Peter this 3 times, the same number of times Peter denied him. That's when Peter understood...

I think Jesus allowed Peter to deny him because he wanted Peter to understand that 1. He (Jesus) was God and knew everything ahead of time. 2. He (Jesus) wanted Peter to understand that he would still love him regardless. 3. Jesus was fulfilling a prophecy. If he had stopped him (which he could have done by the way), then no one would have known about it at all.

Jesus knew what the Old Testaments prophecied and He came to fulfill them. Thus He knew Peter was going to deny Him and that Judas was going to betray Him. Jesus knew that these two men had to do these actions in order for Him to fulfill the prophecies from the Old Testament. And this was all part of God's plan for our savlation and Jesus wasn't going to intrude on God's plan. God sent Jesus to carry out His plan.

I've often wondered if Judas went to hell for committing suicide. But now I think he might have went to purgatory and/or Heaven because he did what he was suppose to do according to God's plan. His betrayal and Peter's denial as part of their purpose on earth and they both followed through with them. I'll find out what happened to them some day.

Peace!

God is a God of gentleness, and He never forces His will upon us, that is why some of His creations will end up in hell.
Jesus knew Peter would deny Him and even told Peter he would.

That is an example of 2 things
1 God's gentleness not to interfere with our free will decisions
2 God's supreme knowledge of the future.

Because we all have our own free will. He couldn't stop him from making his own decision just like he can't stop any of us from making our own decisions. Because of it Peter was able to see that nothing he did would ever change the way the Jesus or God loves him. His love for him is unconditional regardless of how many times he denies Him and comes back.

I guess to prove a point.
In the OT, there is a prophesy about how the Messiah would be rejected by his own close friends and allowed to be led away to his own death.
"I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother's children. Because zeal for your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches of those who reproach."
Psalm 69:8,9
"I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none. And for comforters, but I found none."
Pslam 69:20

Yes, it's called free will, we are not controlled by God. Even if He knew it was going to happen, He couldn't stop it. Jesus came down here to die for our sins because He loves us soooo much, and He knew there was no stopping it. He was obeying God.

Because he gave us free will, that's why He is perfect.
Also so we can learn from it. That God knows everything, and even thou Peter knew that too. Still, he made the mistake.

Peter had a choice just like you do. Why do you deny him?
