Wait till your 18 - hopefully by that time you will have realized how cliche and unoriginal the idea is. Why would your parents let you get one at that age anyway? I'd bet my life they don't have any tattoos themselves. Am I right?

Well, sorry to disappoint but you won't be able to at 14 even if your parents said that you could. It's illegal to tattoo below 18. Some places will do it if you are 16 but your parents need to be there and sign a written consent. Maybe your parents let you get a tattoo at 14 because they know you can't?
Also - a butterfly is a VERY common tattoo....and if you grow taller which I'm assuming that you're going to because you're only 14...there's a chance that it's going to get misshapen or disfigured because while your body grows, your tattoo doesn't. Maybe use this time to think about what you really want and what really has meaning to you and would represent something about you. Take the time to create a unique tattoo...
Wait until you're 18

At fifteen, there aren't many places you can go to get a tattoo. I would suggest waiting at least a year before thinking of getting a tattoo. Two years ago I thought I would have liked to have a heart or a butterfly or something equally generic. If your parents consent and you live in an area that will allow fifteen year olds to get tattoos, then none of us can surely stop you. I'd suggest getting something a little less generic and putting some time and effort in to something that you'd like to have FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

OK, I know it is personal preference, but I have to agree with the previous poster that lower back tattoos, esp. of butterflies, are a little trendy & trashy. Besides that though, I do think it is up to the individual, and if that is what really appeals to you and suits your personality best, then great. I would definitely wait a while though. I don't know laws from sate to state, but some places you have to be 18 regardless of who gives permission. Besides, it is something that will be with you a while (and is costly to remove) so you need to be sure it is something you can live with and not just a passing fad. I'd suggest if you are the least bit creative, or have an artistic friend, you work on a design that is unique and fits you instead of going in and picking some generic flash off the wall. It will ultimately mean more to you. And, research the tattoo artist too, check out samples of his/her work and, if you can, talk to references! This is a big deal, not something to do lightly!

I think you should wait til your 18 because most states wont even tattoo even with your parents consent until your at least 16, plus your only 14 you are probably not fully grown yet and you dont want a messed up tat if you should have another growth spurt.
Plus a butterfly is cute but you might in 4 years come to think you shouldve waited and gotten something alot more meaningful to you instead of getting what most chicks get.
You do have awesome parents though if they are willing to let you get one.
Good Luck.
Ok sorry i had to edit this from the 1st comment, lower back tats are not tramp stamps and its pathetic that another girl would reference something typically branded by men.
Do not listen to her about that, get what you want and where you want.

Wait until you have properly grown around when you are 18, I waited until a week before my 18th birthday to get my first tatoo on my leg somewhere which wont really cause it to distort later in life, im not getting my arms done until im 19 or 20 until I let my body fully grow
a tattoo at 14 you will most likely regret

As fond as I am of tattoos, yes, you should wait. If nothing else, wait until 18 and think of it as a gift to yourself for making it to (legal) adulthood. This is a particularly good way to get your parents to spring for a very nice bit of work too. They'll likely feel obligated to cover it since you took their advice and held out a bit.
It's also nice to have some time to think about what you really want and to work out what you like the look of, but can't stand after a period of time. Who knows, they might even have some useful input on design. Your parents sound fairly cool, so stranger things have been known to happen.

You need help. Just FYI, anyone tattooing a 14 year old is subject to prosecution for felony child abuse, so you need to go to school, get good graded, and drool over Justin Timberlake, and worry about tattoos when you turn 18. Same thing with piercings.
