no, it was a form of yeast. It can still be found some in limited quantities. It is the powdery looking substance you see on certain vegetables like red cabbage. As a matter of fact some people make bread by adding a bit of cabbage to milk and a little flour until it starts acting and then they pull the cabbage out.
