New York's best shopping:

The East Village has lots of little shops/independant designer boutiques. Try Tokio 7 at 64 East 7th Street at First Avenue - it's a designer consignment shop. It can get very crowded, but you can find things here you won't see anywhere else. If you like Denim, look at Famous Friends at 616 East 9th Street (between Avenues B and C)

Walk through Soho - wonderful clothing stores.

Chinatown for inexpensive bags, scarves, costume jewelry

Wet Seal at Broadway and Bond Street

The stores on Grand Street - the blocks between Canal and Houston - lot of very inexpensive, stylish stores

Eighth Avenue in the 30's - "The Garment District" - try the stores on the sidestreets - walk up 35th Street from Sixth Avenue to Ninth Avenue and then walk back down 36th Street, back down 37th, etc - these stores supply other stores, but a lot of them sell retail as well as wholesale. They always have signs in the window that will tell you if they sell "retail".

Definitely check Macy's and Lord & Taylor - their sales are fantastic. Even if they're not having a sale, check their clearance racks - usually at the back of the department - you can get things at 75% off the original price.

You do NOT want to drive in midtown - take a suitcase on wheels to hold your purchases and use the buses and walk.

Also, be sure to ask the concierge at the hotel you are staying at for shopping recommendations; they can be very knowledgeable and helpful.
