I have a gym membership and I like to walk for an hour on the treadmill with the incline set very high. I can usually burn between 400 and 600 calories an hour this way, according to the calorie counter thingy on the treadmill. Can that possibly be accurate? I find with running I tire out much faster and don't end up burning as much because I have to stop. Am I just not pushing myself hard enough?

walking is the optimal exercise for human beings. We were designed to walk long distances and run or sprint short ones.
Keep up your walking, you are doing fine.
Running is hard on the joints, especially the knees, most long distance runners end up with total knee replacement surgery by the time they are 60.

If you pace yourself walking instead of running, you CAN burn more calories. The longer you go, the more calories you burn. So if you tire out quickly running slow it down and just walk longer. You may try to ease yourself into walking a faster pace until you can withstand a longer time running. Build up to it.
